The Conscious Carer

Corron, 15, is a young carer for his ten-year-old twin sisters, Daisy and Emily, who have learning disabilities. He helps his mum with household chores as well as supporting his sisters with their homework. Corron often finds he is juggling a lot of different responsibilities and can feel overwhelmed. His story captures his life as a young carer in Blackpool. He’s found that photographing the world around him has opened his eyes to a new hobby and perhaps a future career.

For his DofE volunteering Corron has set up the Resilience Club, a ‘safe space’ for younger students in years seven to nine to share their feelings and concerns in a bid to boost their self-esteem, mental health and wellbeing. He says that the way Covid has disrupted education means many students are still struggling to settle into high school but adds that Resilience Club is already making a difference as they start to feel more comfortable and confident both in and out of class.

“ The photography course was a fantastic opportunity which built up my self esteem and self confidence. Out of this course, I managed to meet HRH Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh which was another once in a lifetime fantastic opportunity and completely life changing. The course taught me so much and led my drive for photography.”
